Gorham Antique Sterling Silver 'Hizen' Pattern Soup Ladle, Providence, RI, c. 1880

1 item left

One of the most wonderful japanesque flatware designs ever created by Gorham was called 'Hizen,' and it was named after an old Japanese province.

The combination of swirling, art nouveau-like styling and exotic foliage is quite striking. Rising up the handle as the design unfolds is an intricate, lovely display of foliage and flowers, with some petals enhanced with light gilding. Amongst the foliate scenery is a scaly, twisted dragon. At the top is a kneeling figure clutching the robes of a Geisha carrying fruit. Engraved in the bowl, with its ruffled edge and lightly gilt interior, is a beautiful display of flowers. The reverse features the unfolding plant with a simple floral accent and a crab.

Provenance: Private Collection.

This stunning serving ladle is marked on the back with Gorham's trademark along with 'STERLING.' It measures just under 12 inches long and weighs 7.30 troy ounces. The reserve on the back of the handle has had a monogram nicely remove. Aside from that, the handle is in excellent condition and has wonderful details.
