Wood and Hughes Antique Coin Silver Candelabrum Base, NYC, c. 1865

'Medallion' pattern holloware is very uncommon and this example is extremely rare. We have never seen candelabra in Medallion.

The top sections are vasi-form in style with two classically designed scrolling cast and applied decorations which connect to the top of the stem and socle. Underneath this section is a circular platform bordered with fine beading.

The trapezoid structure is stunning with large, 3-dimensional portrait medallions. The medallion used on the front and back, which depicts a helmeted warrior with a dragon, is typically identified as Achilles. (1)  The medallion used on the sides has not been identified.

The circular, stepped platform base is raised on four feet with semi-circular indentations.

The underside of this rare object is marked 'W&H' and with the coin silver standard '900/1000'. The wide base measures 6.25 in diameter while the overall height is 9.75 inches high. It weighs 20.15 troy ounces.  The socle opening is larger than your standard candlestick.

Endnote:

  1. This identification is based on an image in Knight's Gems or Device Book (Plate 74 in the 1836 2nd Edition), published by J. Williams, London, n.d.
