Whiting Antique Sterling Silver Coffee and Table Service, NYC, NY, c. 1880

1 item left

This stunning collection of silver consists of a 5-piece coffee/ tea set, two oval dome covers of different sizes, water pitcher, two platters of different sizes, covered butter dish, covered cheese dish, covered vegetable tureen, preserve dish and dessert creamer and sugar on an oval tray (referred to as a 'berry set' in the archives).

It is very elegant in its shape and design. The pieces are decorated with wonderful Renaissance-inspired die-rolled banding (highly similar to Whiting's Arabesque pattern in flatware - a Charles Osborne design). A coffee and teapot, sugar, creamer, and waste comprise the coffee service. All of the pieces have a lovely surface that reflects their surroundings and accentuates the intricate, beautiful design of the banding.

A few of Whiting's records are housed at the Gorham Archives at the John Hay Brown Library at Brown University. Pictured below are original images of the coffee service, domes,  dessert creamer & sugar, and preserve dish. The domes are shown without under trays and could be used with either silver or porcelain trays.

The pieces are marked with Whiting's trademark and "STERLING.," along with various model numbers. Some are also marked "WHITING MF'G CO./ NEW YORK." The heights of the coffee pot, water pitcher, and largest tray are 7.25 inches high,  and 15 inches long by 11 inches wide, respectively. The total weight of the service is 333.90 troy ounces. It is in very good condition with some typical light scratching and light wear to some surfaces. The original ivory insulators have been replaced with bone ones.
