Tiffany & Co. Ivy Engraved Antique Sterling Silver Covered Butter Dish, New York City, 1865-70

This lovely butter dish consists of its base, removable cover and original pierced insert. The domed cover is bordered with a bold line of applied beading and has a lovely cast artichoke finial handle attached with its original wing-nut, which is decorated with scrolling volutes. Stylized classical engraving decorates the cover and incorporates scenes of ivy.

The base is bordered with complimentary beading around its edge and has four handles. These applied handles are cast and ornamented at the tops with ivy leaves. Applied ivy leaves also decorate the pedestal base and are spaced below the midsections of the handles. The removable insert has a beautiful pierced design emanating from a central circle.

This stunning butter dish is marked underneath 'TIFFANY & CO./ 1616/ QUALITY 925-1000/ m'. It measures 7.5 inches wide by 5.25 inches high, weighs 23.80 troy ounces, has never been monogrammed and is in very good/ excellent antique condition.
