This lovely salver is an early example of William Gale silver for Tiffany & Co. The scalloped border is a bold design with an applied decorative, raised edge. Classical acanthus leaves are repoussed around the interior edge. The flat interior consists of a plain ring, a chased area of looping swirls with leaves, and a center chased to compliment the outer edge decoration. The presentation is engraved:

Eliphalet Wickes Blatchford(1826-1914) married Mary Emily Williams(1834-1921) on October 7, 1858. Eliphalet Blatchford 'attended Illinois College and became a lead manufacturer in St. Louis. His success in this industry allowed him to relocate to Chicago, where his company became E.W. Blatchford and Co. which specialized in lead plumbing, animal feed, and wire for munitions... Blatchford's contributions continue to be present across the state of Illinois through his extensive work as a trustee of Illinois College, Rockford Seminary, and the Art Institute of Chicago.'(1) This salver was a gift from his sister Martha Wickes Blatchford and her husband Morris Collins of St. Louis, MO.
This wonderful salver is marked 'Tiffany & C0/ ENGLISH STERLING/ 925-1000/665/ 550 BROADWAY' and stamped twice 'G' for William Gale. It measures 10 inches in diameter by 1 inch high, weighs 18.17 troy ounces and is in very good antique condition.
