A very rare and intriguing pattern by Tiffany is 'Ailanthus.' Unusual and exotic leaves on the front and back make up the design and shape of the handle. Above the gilt tines is lovely foliate piercing.
According to William P. Hood in Tiffany Silver Flatware, the 'Ailanthus' pattern is based on Ailanthus altissima, or the Chinese 'Tree of Heaven.' He also states that: 'Ailanthus is rarely available.'
This lovely server is marked on the back 'PAT/ TIFFANY & CO/STERLING/1899'. It measures just under 7 inches long, weighs 0.85 troy ounces, has never been monogrammed, and is in good condition with overall light wear and wear to the gilding.
