For that special picture, this stunning easel picture frame incorporates the Beaux-Arts style of lavish, ornate decoration. The shield body has reeded borders with fine beading and swags hanging from an elaborate upper rim with a reserve engraved 'JAD.' The reverse of this reserve is engraved 'April 5, 1901.'
Bird heads with their plumage traveling downwards flank the upper shoulders of the frame. Splayed feet with beading and scroll designs create a lovely base. The shaped easel stand, the wooden insert, and the beveled glass are all original.
Provenance: Private Collection.
This lovely picture frame is marked 'TIFFANY & CO/ 12228 MAKERS 6713 STERLING SILVER 925-1000 T.' It measures 8 inches tall by 6.25 inches wide and weighs 7.70 troy ounces (frame only). There is a restored crack in the original wooden back, and it lacks the pins to hold the wooden back in place. However, the back holds tightly in the frame, so someone must have thought these pins were unnecessary. (Both are visible in the photos.) The sterling frame is in excellent antique condition.
