Tiffany & Co. 'Ailanthus' Antique Sterling Silver Sugar Sifter, NYC, c. 1900

Notify me when similar is available:

A very rare and intriguing pattern by Tiffany is 'Ailanthus'. Unusual and exotic leaves on the front and back make up the design and shape of the handle. The shaped, oval bowl is beautifully pierced to sift sugar or strain liquids.

According to William P. Hood in Tiffany Silver Flatware, the 'Ailanthus' pattern is based on Ailanthus altissima, or the Chinese 'Tree of Heaven'. He also states that: 'Ailanthus is rarely available.'

This lovely server is marked on the back 'PAT/ TIFFANY & CO/STERLING/1899'. It measures just over 5.5 inches long, weighs 1.570 troy ounces, has never been monogrammed and is in excellent condition.
