This magnificent work of art is in the form of an oversized goblet. The organic base resembles a tree trunk with its impressive dimensions and textured surface. With chased and pierced decoration, the base is ornamented with leaves and cattail designs. The Secessionist-inspired base is visually dramatic and beautiful. At the top of the stem, there is an engraved 'MCW' monogram.

The bowl is Japanese Satsuma pottery, exhibiting stunning hand-painted gilding and a spectrum of colors against a cream-colored body.  The interior is a spectacular display of polychrome enameled chrysanthemums, while the exterior is a more reserved display of Japanese-influenced design.

This lovely compote is marked inside the base 'SHREVE & CO/  SAN FRANCISCO/ STERLING.' It measures 10.75 high by 6 inches in diameter and is in excellent antique condition.
