Shiebler Antique Sterling Silver Nautical Sardine Serving Fork, NYC, NY, c. 1880s

George Shiebler created some extraordinary designs, and this sardine server is no exception.

A sardine swimming amongst seaweed on the handle creates a beautiful scene. The seaweed wraps around the back, and there are also a couple of small areas of sand decoration towards the bottom of the handle. The wavy tines and surrounding area are gilded on the front and back. On the front is an octopus with outstretched arms, and the back is engraved 'Bimm.' We've had a few different examples of Shiebler's sardine forks, but this is the first one of this style we have had.

This wonderful and rare server is marked with Shiebler's winged 'S' trademark, 'STERLING/ 2551.' It measures 6.25 inches long, weighs 1.80 troy ounces, and is in excellent antique condition.
