Shiebler Antique Sterling Silver Figural Desk Blotter/ Stamp Box, New York City, 1893

This rare desk blotter is beautifully designed and quite unique. The classical shaped borders consist of scrolling foliate devices. The flat top has 2 hinged covers which flip upwards to reveal compartments for holding stamps, etc. One compartment runs the width of the top while the other is separated halfway. The bold handle depicts a standing lion holding a shield which is monogrammed on one side 'JGH' and with the date 'April 2nd 1893' on the other. This finial screws onto a post connected to the rosewood blotter holding the pieces firmly together.

This blotter is marked with Shiebler's winged 'S' trademark and 'STERLING/ 3548'. It measures 4.5 inches long, 2.5 inches deep and 3.25 inches high. It is in excellent antique condition.
