Obiadiah Rich Antique Sterling Silver Cream Jug, Boston, MA, c. 1840

A wonderful example of silver from the shop of important Boston silversmith Obadiah Rich, this piece displays wonderful decoration. The spreading foot has repoussed floral and foliate decoration. The vase shaped body has acanthus leaf decoration at the base then a broad band of repoussed floral, foliate and scroll decoration around the mid-section against a stippled background of tiny circles. A cartouche within scrolls and rocaille decoration has never been monogrammed.

The handle, made of three twisted pieces of silver wire, is hand chased to resemble a grape vine. This handle merges with and becomes part of the rim, where chased grapes, vines and leaves flow from this rim.

In outstanding condition, the surface of this piece is extraordinarily well preserved and crisp. It measures 8.5 inches high, 4.5 inches across the spout and handle and weighs a nice 10.15 troy ounces. It is marked underneath "O. RICH", "fine" and "BOSTON".
