Leslie Durbin Modern Sterling Silver Figural Owl Desk Seal, London, 1962/63

This is a magnificent, small sculpture in sterling silver with a gilt surface. It is very heavy for its size and of wonderful quality. The textured feathers and regal stance along with staring diamond eyes make this a work of art. Underneath is an inserted stone seal which I haven't been able to decipher.

Leslie Durbin is considered one of Britain's great mid-century silversmiths. After working as an apprentice and then journeyman for the important arts & crafts master Omar Ramsden, Durbin continued his training with a scholarship from the Goldsmiths' Company when he studied modeling. This is where he excels, as can be clearly seen in this outstanding piece. His work can be found in many British museums, including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

This stunning owl is fully hallmarked on the base below the wings. It measures just shy of 3.5 inches high and is in excellent antique condition.
