A rare and wonderful American coin silver card case, this features scenes on one side of the US Capitol Building and the other of Trinity Church on Wall Street in New York. The Capitol Building is wonderfully executed with flying flags and the old Bullfinch dome. Both scenes are set against a shiny, matte finish and surrounded by robust rococo revival foliage and scroll decoration.
This view of the U.S. Capitol is rarely seen today. After being burned by the British during the war of 1812, the Capitol was rebuilt with designs by noted Boston classical architect Charles Bullfinch. This view of the U. S. Capitol dominated the Washington skyline until 1856 when it was rebuilt and enlarged. Trinity Church was consecrated in 1846 and its Gothic spire could be seen from all over lower Manhattan at that time.
This coin silver card case is unmarked, however ones with identical scenes marked ‘L&W’ for Leonard and Wilson of Philadelphia are known. The case measures 2.5 inches wide by 3.5 inches high, weighs 1.40 troy ounces, and is in excellent antique condition.
