Knowles Bright-cut Antique Sterling Silver Pierced Server, Providence, RI, c. 1880s

A gilt bowl or scoop with a matte finish is beautifully pierced and engraved with stunning visual effect. The five tines are leaves at the ends of twisting vines. Engraved on the handle is a lovely floral scene against a soft, matte finish

Knowles is the 'other' silver firm from Providence, RI.  Working in Gorham's shadow, they never have received the recognition they deserve for their fine silver work. The pierced engraved work they did in the 1880s is some of the best around.

This lovely server is marked with Knowles trademark and 'STERLING/ 12'. It measures just under 7.5 inches long , weighs 1.35 troy ounces, has never been monogrammed and is in excellent antique condition.
