Knowles Aesthetic Movement Antique Sterling Silver Serving Scoop, Providence, RI, c. 1880's

This is a spectacular and rare serving scoop. Very reminiscent of Shiebler's 'Homeric' flatware, this piece is made of heavy gauge silver with an irregularly hammered surface. In fact, everything about the shapes including the handle and bowl are shaped irregularly. The handle has deeply cut lines near the bowl below a gilded triangular design. The top of the handle has a beautifully gilded section with star decoration.

The bowl is also very unusual with its shaped edge. It is mostly gilded and then decorated with Egyptianate papyrus and floral decoration along with other aesthetic movement motifs.

This rare and beautiful server is marked on the reverse with JB & SM Knowles trademark and 'STERLING'. It measures 9.25 inches long, weighs 3.75 troy ounces, has never been monogrammed and is in excellent antique condition.
