Hugh Wishart's working dates are 1784-1825 in New York and he made some wonderful silver, some of it found today in museum collections. Unusual shapes and exceptional bright cut engraved decoration make this service rare and quite beautiful.
All pieces have applied ball feet attached at the corners with applied decorative molding. Rectangular, bulbous bodies are ornamented on both sides with lovely engraved wreaths around blank reserves which have never been monogrammed. Two rows of fine dot beading circumscribe the upper area. A wonderful one -inch panel is engraved with stunning flowing foliage against a background of numerous horizontal lines with ovals and circles containing flowers.
It is interesting to note that this ornamental border and the domed area above it is octagonal. Incorporating this variation on the form was extremely difficult and attests the ability, skill, and imagination of the silversmith.
Decorative banding matching the base decorates the top edges of the pieces and also the edge of the oval-domed finials. The bold, plain surfaces of the handles and the graceful curve of the spout complete the design.
The waste bowl is an interesting item. It is much larger and could be used as a centerpiece. It is constructed in such a way that the decoration and cartouche are not centered on the base - unusual but still quite lovely.
The coffee pot, sugar bowl, and creamer are all marked 'H. WISHART' along with his pseudo marks. The waste bowl is unmarked. The coffee/ teapot measures 12 inches across the handle and spout by 7.5 inches high. The waste bowl measures 5.75 inches high by 6.75 inches round. The service weighs a total of 70.85 troy ounces and is in very good antique condition with a couple of minor dimples to the handles and finials and expected wear to the hollow ball feet.
