Gorham "Lady's" Pattern Antique Sterling Silver Salad Set, Providence, RI, c. 1868

1 item left

Gorham's "Lady's" pattern is a wonderful and whimsical design, as can be seen in this rare and early salad serving set. Holding the bowls, as if serving, are cast representations of a woman's hand. We do not know why, but sometimes the hand is sporting a ring on the wedding finger. In this case, the textured hands with decorative cuffs are without rings. The bowls and hands are covered with their original gilding. Made from multiple parts, decorative bands attach the hand section to the handle's stem and the upper part. A circular disc with a bowed ribbon is decorated with an engraved, decorative circle around a bright-cut engraved 'A' monogram.

This pattern's design, whimsy, and details can only be truly appreciated on larger servers like these.

This very rare sterling serving set is marked with Gorham's trademark and 'PATENT 1868/STERLING/ GORHAM MFG. CO.' The spoon and fork measure 10.25 and 9.75 inches respectively and weigh a combined 5.35 troy ounces. They come in their original box which exhibits wear, however; it has preserved the silver which is in excellent antique condition.
