Gorham 'Eglantine' Antique Sterling Silver Aesthetic Movement Covered Tureen, Providence, 1884

This is a magnificent tureen with great presence and stunning decoration. A shaped pedestal base is the only part unadorned. The main body has wonderful reeding below an incredible floral and foliate display on a hammered background. This decoration is all repoussé and exceptionally fine work. Cast, twisted handles are applied at the ends.

The removable cover is also a great work of art executed in the same fashion with an array of flowers. A dramatic curved branch terminating with leaves and a wonderful flower acts as the handle.

'Eglantine' is a stunning pattern of dramatic roses, branches and leaves set on a hammered background. Flatware in this pattern is uncommon and examples of holloware are very rare. Over the past 20 years, we have only had couple other pieces of holloware in this pattern including a child's cup identical to the one pictured in the Gorham CD's.

This wonderful tureen is marked with Gorham's trademark and 'STERLING/ 310/ Q'. It measures 13.5 inches across the handle by 7.75 inches deep by 8.25 inches tall, weighs 67.30 troy ounces and is in excellent crisp condition.
