Gorham "Bird's Nest" Antique Sterling Silver Pie Server, Providence, RI, c. 1870

1 item left

This is a rare form in Gorham's very rare 'Bird's Nest' pattern. Introduced c. 1869, this pattern is one of the rarest and most unusual of the American naturalistic designs in silver. It is an amazing pattern in superb condition, as this one is.

It is comprised of multiple castings and stampings which were later hand-finished for detail, then assembled into the various serving pieces. The handle is in the form of a tree branch that splits into three branches at the top, holding the bird's nest. The handle base has two large leaves that serve as both decoration and support. The beautiful 3-dimensional gilt nest contains three eggs. The fully cast bird, wings spread, perches on the nest, watching over the eggs. The shaped blade is beautifully decorated with a foliate device and classical engraving.

This wonderful server is marked on the back with Gorham's trademark and 'STERLING.' It measures just shy of 10.5 inches long, weighs 3 troy ounces, and is in excellent antique condition.
