This elegant creamer has an applied handle decorated with a classical leaf. A stunning band features putti riding chariots, pulling their horses to a stop. Partial gilding is used on the horses' reins and as a background to enhance the scenes. Fine beading is used on both sides of this banding and is complimented with larger beading at the bottom of the cup above a splayed ring base.
Provenance:
Private Collection.
This lovely creamer is marked with Gorham's trademark and 'STERLING/ 1465' and with the 'I' date mark for 1876. The band actually has 'Patent 1874' as part of the die- something we have never seen before. The creamer measures 5.25 inches across the handle and spout by just over 4.5 inches to the top of the handle, weighs 8.15 troy ounces and is in very good condition with wear to the interior gilding.
