Dominick & Haff Antique Sterling & Other Metals Dishes, NYC, 1880

Exceptionally designed and executed, these dishes are mixed-metal stunners from the aesthetic movement. The dishes are square with concave sides between the pointed corners. The centers are round and plain with one having a lightly ruffled edge.

Various exotic plants and animals created in either brass or copper decorate these rare dishes. They are all hand-finished for detail. Irregular placement of the appliques against the hand-chased foliate background is captivating.

One dish features a bamboo spray and a branch made of brass and a fern made of copper. There is a copper salamander and a butterfly with both copper and brass wings. The copper wings are inlaid with brass and the brass wings are inlaid with copper and silver.

The other dish features a beetle made of brass and a fern and scene of a bird eating berries in copper. A delightful butterfly is executed in copper with silver decoration.

These lovely antique sterling silver dishes are marked with Dominick & Haff's trademark with the 1880 date and 'STERLING'. They measure 6.25 inches square by .75 inches high, weigh 6.90 troy ounces each, and are in excellent antique condition.
