This spectacular covered tureen is a work of art. Dominick & Haff from New York City made exceptional silver to which this tureen exemplifies. The rectangular shape with curved corners is a wonderful form. The splayed, attached band, which acts as the foot, is unadorned and contrasts nicely with the highly decorative design.

The bold loop handles, as seen above, are decorated on the tops and terminate at the body with leaf decorations.

The exotic design and execution is superb. Climbing foliage with leaves and berries emanate from the corners. Various depictions of butterflies inhabit the various scenes. Fourteen butterflies are depicted including one on each of the handles.

The background, which enhances the wonderful flora and fauna, is a canvas of chased dense leaves.

The design continues fluidly around its edges with large flowers on each of the corners

The cover is equally spectacular with a large, loop handle. Two large different butterflies are on opposite ends of the rectangular cover. Framing the cover is a undecorated band.

This rare tureen is marked underneath with Dominick & Haffs trademark which includes the '1881' date. It is also stamped 'STERLING/ 88' and by the New York City retailer 'THEODORE B. STARR'. It measures 13.5 inches across the handles by 8.25 inches wide by 8.5 inches high, weighs 75.10 troy ounces and is in excellent antique condition with very minor scratching and a couple dings to the base of the interior from use.
