Charles Boyton and Son English Art Deco Sterling Silver Coffee Service on Tray, London, 1932/33, the tray 1933/34

Great examples of art deco silver are quite rare. Exceptional design and craftsmanship come together to create this work of art. Bold triangular geometric shapes define the service with the bodies consisting of eight panels with square tops. The degree of difficulty to execute all the edges so perfectly required extraordinary skill. The covers are a square, stepped pyramid design mounted with wooden square finials. The pots' covers are hinged while the tea caddy's cover is removable. The creamer and sugar have applied handles with conforming, stepped thumb-pieces and feet.
The rectangular tray with cut corners is amazing with raised sides and stepped edge. As with the pots, the tray retains its carved wood handles. On the front of the tray and each piece of the set are engraved decorative arms of a marching lion above a banner with the motto 'NUNQUAM RETRORSUM' meaning 'Never Retreat.'
This stunning set is fully hallmarked for London 1932/33, and all pieces are signed 'Charles Boyton.' The tray, also a Boyton design, has Sheffield hallmarks for 1933/34. It was made by Roberts & Belk, is signed 'Charles Boyton,' and was almost certainly a special order for this service. (Large trays such this are very difficult to make, requiring specialist makers and tools. As the service was made at the depth of the depression, it is likely Boynton did not currently employ a specialist tray maker.)
The coffee pot measures 8 inches high by 7.7 inches high and the tray measures 23 inches long by 14.5 inches wide.Made from heavy gauge silver, the coffee service weighs an impressive 67 troy ounces with the tray adding another 104 troy ounces. All pieces are in very good/ excellent condition with the tray exhibiting light surface scratches from normal use.
