Arthur Stone Sterling Silver Decorated Spoons, Gardner, MA, 1909

These 8 elegant spoons have a beautiful hammered surfaces with slender handles and pointed bowls. Practically identical flowers on stems are hand-chased on each of the handles. These rare silver spoons from the Arthur Stone shop were made by two different craftsmen, 5 spoons by George Blanchard and 3 by Sylvanus Lamprey. This rare size of spoon is oftentimes referred to as a 5 o'clock teaspoon spoon.

George P. Blanchard is listed as a Craftsman working for Stone from 1906-1909. Sylvanus E. Lamprey is listed as a Spoonmaker and Line Chaser with working dates from 1909-1912. He achieved 'Master Craftsman' status at the Society of Arts & Crafts, Boston (Arthur J. Stone 1847-1938 Designer and Silversmith by Elenita Chickering, pp 180-181). Due to the overlap in their working dates one can specifically date this set to 1909.

Arthur Stone himself would have hand chased the floral decoration on these spoons. Generally considered the most important American silversmith of the arts and crafts movement, Arthur Stone was an exceptional chaser and these spoons are beautiful examples of his work.

These lovely sterling silver spoons are marked underneath with Stone's impressed hammer mark along with 'STERLING'. Four are also stamped with a 'B' and three with an 'L'. They measure 5.25 inches long, weigh a combined 3.60 troy ounces and are in very good/excellent antique condition.
