Antique Sheffield Plate Covered Tureen on Stand, c. 1805-10

This massive tureen on stand is an exceptional example of antique Sheffield plate. The oval tureen has its original removable liner with loop handles. Plain surfaces are offset by dramatic lobed decoration to the body and complementary fluted decoration to the upper portion of the spreading pedestal foot. Cast lobed banding is applied around the rim and dramatic handles with floret terminals are applied at the ends.

The domed, oval lid has lobed decoration to the upper portion surmounted by a beautifully executed robust bloom of an acanthus flower.

The very rare original stand makes this presentation extremely impressive. Cast and applied ball decoration above bold fluting decorates the wall of the raised interior pedestal fitted with a ring to hold the tureen in place. The plain surfaces of the lid and stand have inset blanks, one on each side which was a common practice in antique Sheffield plate so when engraved the copper underneath wouldn't show. These have never been monogrammed or engraved.

Finding a tureen with its original stand of this quality and caliber is extremely rare. This one has a real presence, measuring an overall 19.5 inches long by 16.5 inches deep and 15 inches high. It is in excellent antique condition.

Later note: This has been published in Gordon Crosskey's Antique Sheffield Plate.
