Andrew E. Warner 11oz Silver Bread or Fruit Basket, Baltimore, c. 1850s

This lovely item is an excellent example of repoussé Baltimore silver by Andrew Ellicott Warner. The oval-shaped body is decorated in stunning repoussé depicting various foliate scenes against a stippled background.

This fluid, 3-dimensional design is executed below the cast and applied edges, which strengthen and enhance the shaped upper rim. Cast and applied loop handles are decorated with foliate motifs and joined at the ends. The four feet are cast as animal paws which splay outwards. The interior of the basket is decorated with a 'snowflake' design around a wreath cartouche with the initials 'R E H M..'

This beautiful silver basket is marked underneath 'A.E.WARNER/ 11OZ'. It measures 12.25 inches long across the handles by 7.25 inches wide by 4.25 inches high, weighs 21.55 troy ounces and is in excellent antique condition.
