One of the most wonderful Japanesque flatware designs ever created was called 'Hizen,' named after an old Japanese province. It was a multi-motif pattern displaying varying scenes on the handles and blades. This exceptional set consists of the fish serving fork and a large fish serving slice.
The combination of fluid nautical styling and exotic foliage is quite striking.
Rising up the fork's handle as the design unfolds is a lovely display of foliage and flowers, with the petals enhanced with slight gilding. Just as beautiful is the back of the handle, with the same treatment of flowers below a hammered reserve monogrammed with a Gothic 'B' initial. Above the wavy tines is a koi swimming in the water.
The stunning blade of the slice is a work of art, with a koi jumping out of the water in an attempt to snare a retreating insect. The way the water is displayed over the fish's body is quite lovely, as is the exotic foliage added to the scene. The handle continues the nautical theme with a tiny frog at its base below a small fish, a larger fish at the top, and a small crab on the reverse.
Provenance: Private Collection.
These stunning servers are marked on the back with Gorham's trademark along with 'STERLING.' The fork and slice measure 9 and 12 inches long, respectively, weigh a combined 8.60 troy ounces, and are in excellent antique condition with slight wear to the gilding. Seeing that the fork has a monogram and the slice does not, we assume they have been united at some point in time.
