Gorham Rare Sterling & Silver Plate Massive Art Nouveau Gallery Tray, Providence, RI, 1915

1 item left

Examples of great gallery trays and American art nouveau silver are quite rare and this is a stunning representation of both. This large tray is uniquely constructed incorporating a sterling gallery, frame, feet and handles. The interior is an original silver plate center used to strengthen the massive size. Cast and applied sterling handles are beautifully formed and decorated with flowing foliate design.

The sterling border is amazing. Reminiscent of Parisian art nouveau gates and fences, this exquisite border is a series of repeating organic flowing floral and foliate designs.

The four feet which attach to the frame splay outwards and are also decorated in this well developed style. They bear their own part number '17727.'

The interior is a flat silver plated surface engraved with an armorial surrounded with the engraved monograms 'F.A' and 'M.E.A'. The armorial consists of an eagle above the family shield with a banner below containing the motto of 'Amicitia Sine Fraude', which translates to 'Friendship without deceit', used by the Allen family.

This rare tray is marked underneath with Gorham's trademark and 'STERLING/ A1840/ 24 IN' along with the date mark for 1915 and the Boston retailer 'BIGELOW, KENNARD & CO.' It measures 28.5 inches long across the handles by 18.25 inches wide by 2.5 inches high and is in excellent antique condition.
