This large server is a lovely example of Danish-inspired design, it is interpreted with DeMatteo's distinctive traits. Two squared silver wires of heavy gauge are slightly angled. The top of the handle is joined to a cast and an applied hanging grape cluster. The base of the handle is attached to the shaped blade.
Although technically working across the river in New Jersey, William G. DeMatteo is considered (along with Peer Smed) to have been New York's finest mid-century silversmith. His hand-wrought silver is always of fine quality. Another of his great achievements was training his son, William L. DeMatteo, as a silversmith. William L. DeMatteo became the first master silversmith at Colonial Williamsburg.
It is stamped underneath 'DEMATTEO/ HAND MADE/ STERLING.' It measures 10.5 inches long, weighs 3.95 troy ounces, has never been monogrammed, and is in very good antique condition with light scratching on the blade from normal use.
