This is a lovely, early and large platter or stuffing serving spoon by Henry Hebbard, a New York City silversmith who made wonderful silver and retailed his wares through high-end retailers like Tiffany & Co.
The exotic design of intertwined scrolls decorates the top and bottom of the handle blank on the front and back. The front is also adorned with a line of beading running down the length of the handle towards the bowl, which is elongated and fluted.
'Oriental' was patented in 1855. Henry Hebbard worked in NYC, was active c.1847-c.1877, and designed a number of popular flatware patterns, many of which were retailed by Tiffany & Co., before Tiffany began making its own flatware. He formed a partnership around 1855 with another important silversmith, John Polhamus, and they were issued joint patents for some of their patterns. (1)
It measures 12.5 inches long, weighs 4.85 troy ounces, has never been monogrammed, and is in very good/ excellent antique condition. It is stamped "HH&Co/ PATENT 1855" and by the retailer "TIFFANY & Co." Also, a "P" is stamped on the back, likely a journeyman's mark.
