Applied, die-rolled bands of Greek-key designs topped with rows of beading adorn the base and upper rim of this cylindrical, tapered child's cup. The front is engraved 'J.M.R./ to/ S.C./ March 1st 1858.' This exquisite cup or mug is an early and great example of American silver.
John Chandler Moore was one of New York's leading silversmiths who sold to many of the city's leading jewelers and retailers, including Tiffany & Co. In 1851, Charles Tiffany requested that Moore supply Tiffany's exclusively. Ultimately, this led to Tiffany becoming the most successful of American silver firms (see Dorothy Rainwater's Encyclopedia of American Silversmiths).
This beautiful cup is marked 'TIFFANY & Co/ 799/ QUALITY/925-1000/ 4431' and with the 'm' in an oval used by John C. and his son Edward C. Moore. It measures 4.5 inches across the body and handle by 3.75 inches high and weighs 7.55 troy ounces and is in very good antique condition.
