John Chandler Moore for Tiffany & Co. Antique Coin Silver Sauce Boat, New York City, c. 1853

One of the initial silver suppliers who retailed their wares through Tiffany & Co. was the great silversmith John Chandler Moore. His son Edward later entered into an exclusive work arrangement with Tiffany. This important firm ultimately became Tiffany's silver department. 

This early and fine example has a large body attached to an oval domed base. The striking handle is a realistic representation of a grapevine with a cluster of grapes and a leaf as a thumb-piece. Emanating from the top of the handle and flowing to the front of the body are repoussed and chased twisting grapevines with leaves. The finely engraved details of the vines and leaves are exquisite. 

This gravy boat is marked 'TIFFANY & Co/ 271 BROADWAY/ J.C.M/ 209'. This lovely sauce boat measures 5.5 inches high by 8.25 inches long, weighs 14 troy ounces, has never been monogrammed and is in excellent antique condition.
