Gorham Antique Sterling 'Hizen' Pattern Shawl Pin/ Brooch, Providence, RI, c. 1880

This is a rare piece of jewelry by Gorham. One of the most wonderful japanesque flatware designs ever created was called 'Hizen,' and it was named after an old Japanese province. Borrowing from handles of tea caddy spoons (see here), Gorham created this lovely pin of nautical inspiration with fish swimming amongst waves. A shell flanked by twisted rope adorns the center of this unusual and eye-catching pin.

This fantastic piece is marked on the reverse at one end with Gorham's trademark and 'STERLING 67.' It measures 4 inches long, weighs .70 troy ounces and is in excellent antique condition.
