The finest elements of French Rococo design were incorporated into creating these extraordinary cast sterling silver candelabra.
Removable candelabra arms with a central socle and three swooping curved arms supporting socles with removable bobeches are beautifully decorated with scrolling leaves and flowers.
The bodies of these candelabra are simply outrageous. Bold, three-dimensional berries, flowers, and leaves spread out in all directions on flowing scroll and rocaille decoration, creating a wonderful sense of movement.
Reminiscent of the genius of the early 18th-century French royal silversmith, Juste-Aurèle Meissonnier, these sculptural masterpieces are taken to a whole new level by Whiting designer Charles Osborne.
When made c. 1890, these candelabra cost $1,600.00 for the pair. That is the equivalent of 4 or 5 horseless carriages (automobiles), just being invented at the time and soon to be considered the ultimate luxury purchase.
These candelabra are marked underneath with Whiting's trademark along with 'STERLING,' the model '3910' and a Gothic 'O.' They measure 16.75 inches high, 14 inches across the arms, and weigh a very impressive 307.95 troy ounces (just over 21 lbs) and are in excellent condition with one bobeche replaced.
