Peter L. Krider Antique Sterling Silver Tea Pot, Philadelphia, PA, c. 1870

This beautiful tea pot is one of the finest Krider pieces we've had the privilege to sell. Currently available on our site is the matching tall coffee pot.  Masterfully executed repousse features exotic buildings and trees.  Large repousse work of leaves and flowers in full bloom surround the structures.  The stippled background adds wonderful depth and brilliance to the piece. The graceful handle and spout are also decorated with foliage. In a very rare detail, the foot is repoussed and pierced (see image below). The front cartouche has been engraved with the family crest of a sailing ship in heavy seas.

Krider was one of the finest silversmiths working in Philadelphia during the 19th century.  After serving an apprenticeship with the noted Philadelphia firm of R. & W. Wilson, he worked for the important Boston silversmith Obadiah Rich.  Returning to Philadelphia, he started his own firm in the early 1850's. His shop excelled at casting, and was one of the largest medal making firms in the country - commissioned to make award medals for the Centennial Exposition in 1876 and others.  They produced exceptional pieces (like this) which can be found in many museum collections.

This tea pot is marked underneath with Peter Krider's trademark, 'STERLING' and 'P.L. KRIDER CO'.  Measuring 8.5 inches high, this pot weighs a very impressive 31.85 troy ounces, retains its original ivory insulators on the handle and is in great condition.
