JE Caldwell (retailer) American Aesthetic Movement Sterling and Glass Viking Ship Form Butter Dish, c. 1900

Notify me when similar is available:

This exceptionally rare butter dish, in the form of a Viking ship, retains its original pierced liner. The blown glass body is hand-cut with horizontal lines simulating the planks of the ship's hull. A series of seven shields with seven different designs hang on the side of the ship. The sterling mounts on the ends are formed as a dragon and its tail. The liner is pierced with stars and weaponry and has a holder for a butter pick.

See here for a variation on this rare dish we sold in 2009.

Provenance: Private Collection.

This wonderful dish is only marked with the model number '10' and 'STERLING' and 'J.E.C. & CO' for the great Philadelphia retailer JE Caldwell & Co. It measures 9 inches long by 4.25 inches wide by 5.25 inches tall and is in excellent antique condition.
