These exquisite candlesticks are some of the nicest American made ones we have seen. Creating molds for the casting of such an intricate design could only have been achieved by a highly skilled silversmith.
A wonderful display of movement with both rococo and art nouveau characteristics is exhibited in this form.
These lovely sticks have their original, removable bobeche reminiscent of a blooming flower.
Swirling foliate elements alternate direction with each section of the candlestick.
The wide, domed bases are lovely with large flowing swirls emanating from the columns and are bordered with a shaped edge.
Howard & Co was an excellent maker during the turn of the century, or 'Belle-Epoque' period. Howard & Co was established in 1866 and by the turn of the 20th century 'the company had branches in Newport and London, in addition to its Fifth Avenue shop in New York' (see Encyclopedia of American Silver Manufacturers by Dorothy Rainwater). Most of their silver was made in the revival taste; it is uniformly quite heavy, well designed and well executed.
This elegant set is marked on the base 'HOWARD & CO/ NEW YORK/ 1896/ STERLING/ 110/ 10.75IN'. They weigh a total 98.95 troy ounces, have never been monogrammed or engraved and are in excellent antique condition.
