This is one of the finest ladles we have had the opportunity to sell. Two curved, twisting grapevine shoots form the log handle. It is adorned and strengthened with applied grape leaves and grape clusters emerging from a tendril that wraps around the handle's length. Perched atop the handle is a very jovial Bacchus with a raised glass. This fun design has him toasting those putting him to good use.
Applied to the handle is a lovely-shaped bowl with two rows of beading and an original gilt interior. Underneath the pouring lip is a wonderful 'RAB' monogram and 'ELEVENTH OF NOVEMBER, 1890' date.
Provenance: Private Collection.
This magnificent ladle is marked with Gorham's trademark, ' STERLING/ 2355', and the 1889 date code. It measures 14 inches long, weighs 8.75 troy ounces, and is in excellent condition.
