Dominick & Haff Antique Sterling Silver Intaglio Chased Shallow Bowl, NYC, NY, 1881

Notify me when similar is available:

Dominick & Haff is one of our favorite companies, especially when they executed pieces in the 1880s in this unique 'intaglio chased' style.

The surface of the bowl and handles is achieved with irregular hammer blows, which create the honeycomb design. It is then given a soft matte shimmering finish.

Raised on four feet, the bowl is deeply chased with various grasses and leaves with lovely details. It is a stunning effect to see parts of leaves curl onto themselves and grasses twisting and folding over themselves. One side has a bee and the other a dragonfly, both in flight.

Provenance: Private Collection.

This exquisite bowl is marked under the base with Dominick & Haff's trademark, 'STERLING/ 294', and by the NYC retailer 'Theodore B. STARR.' It measures just shy of 10.5 inches across the handles by 3.25 inches tall, weighs 21.40 troy ounces, and is in excellent antique condition with very light scratches and wear to the original gilt interior.
