Peter Krider Antique Sterling Silver Repousséd Pair of Salt Cellars, Philadelphia, PA, 1878-94

These lovely salts are beautifully ornamented with very fine details. The open area at the top has an applied, gadrooned edge. The body exhibits wonderful repoussé work of flowers and leaves against a stippled background. Underneath the foliate repoussé scene is a ring of aesthetic decoration.

Three cast and applied lion heads with paw feet are wonderfully expressive.

Krider was one of the finest silversmiths working in Philadelphia during the 19th century.  After serving an apprenticeship with the noted Philadelphia firm of R. & W. Wilson, he worked for the  important Boston silversmith Obadiah Rich.  Returning to Philadelphia, he started his own firm in the early 1850's.  His shop excelled at casting, and was one of the largest medal making firms  in the country - commissioned to make award medals for the Centennial Exposition in 1876 and others.  They produced exceptional pieces which can be found in many museum collections.

These salts are marked underneath with Peter Krider's trademark along with 'STERLING/ 685' and by the Philadelphia retailer 'BAILEY, BANKS & BIDDLE'.  They measure 2.75 inches wide by 1.5 inches high, have a combined weight of 5.15 troy ounces and are in very good/ excellent antique condition.
