This exceptional covered serving platter is the largest known piece of Kalo silver. The oval platter is 25.5 inches long. It is hand-raised with domed areas on the ends, which act as handles. A thick, rolled-edge border decorates and strengthens the perimeter. The base's interior is flat, with curved sides and a step into which the dome fits.
The dome is a magnificent silversmithing accomplishment. Due to its size, heavy gauge silver, and oval shape, raising this stunning dome could only have been achieved by an incredibly skilled silversmith. A shaped handle with triangular ends is attached to the top of the fitted domed cover. Lovely hammering covers all of the surface areas.
The platter's underside is engraved in a circle 'S' in the middle of the date '1912'. Then it is engraved 'TO,' and within the second circle, it is engraved 'EKB' between the date '1929'.
The Kalo Shop is known for its hammered surfaces and creative, forward-looking arts & crafts designs. It was started by Clara Barck Welles, who was 'known for her fair employment practices and for giving opportunities to women to become metalsmiths.' (1)

This stunning and exceptionally rare serving dish is marked 'STERLING/ HAND WROUGHT/ AT/ THE KALO SHOPS/ CHICAGO/ E249'. It measures 25.5 inches long by 15.5 inches wide by 9.5 inches high, weighs an impressive 184 troy ounces, and is in excellent antique condition with scratches to the interior surface from use.
