Gorham Special Order Antique Coin Silver Figural Punch Bowl, Providence, RI, c. 1867

This rare punch bowl is an amazing example of Gorham figural silver. The main body is a lovely form and is bordered with classical die-rolled banding. Engraved on the front are the initials 'D. O. M.' above the date 'Sept. 5th, 1867' above a family crest. This may have been a presentation for a horse sporting event or made for a family associated with horses or the industry as the decorations are all about horses. The unique handles are applied to an engraved background. They consist of cast and applied draped saddles, pads, crops, stirrups and large, free-swinging circular bits all surmounted with lovely jockey's caps.

The base is an impressive, shaped plinth with a splayed bottom edge decorated in matching die-rolled banding. On each end are stunning cast representations of putti riding hippocampi (the sea horses Poseidon used for his chariot).

The putti are beautifully cast with fine details. The horses are amazing with scaly tails , textured skins, manes, expressive faces and crossed legs.

This stunning centerpiece punch bowl is marked underneath with Gorham's trademark and the California retailer 'J.W. TUCKER/ SAN FRANCISCO CA'.

John William Tucker ran the most important jewelry firm in San Francisco from his arrival in 1849 until his death in 1876. He would special order important pieces from Gorham for his best clients.

It measures 13.75 inches wide by 13.75 inches tall, weighs an impressive 102 troy ounces and is in very good/ excellent antique condition with light wear to the original gilt interior.

Provenance: This has a history of ownership in the DuPont family, although the 'D.O.M.' monogram remains a mystery.
