Gorham Antique Sterling Silver Champagne Pitcher, Providence, RI, 1887

Notify me when similar is available:

This is a beautiful and rare champagne server, although it could be used for almost anything.

The tall, slender body is decorated with spiral flutes with chased leaf decoration. The base is bordered with oxidized leaves with leaves spreading upwards on the plain surfaced spirals.

The hinged cover is a unique shape. It is also incised with lines and has a leaf thumb piece matching their 'Grecian' flatware pattern.

The handle is quite striking. It is decorated on the interior with a large leaf and terminates at the top with cast and applied leaves. Straddling the handle at the top is a whimsical bacchanal holding a goblet as if making a toast.

There is a lovely 'ANSR' script monogram underneath.

Champagne pitchers are incredibly rare. This is the second one we have ever had to sell and it is a beautiful design. We had the pleasure of selling the other one years ago. You can view it here.

Gorham champagne pitcher archival image

Archival image of the Gorham champagne pitcher No. 1395 from the Gorham Company Archives, John Hay Library, Brown University.

This stunning pitcher is marked underneath with Gorham's trademark and 'STERLING' along with the date symbol for 1887. It measures 12.5 inches high to the top of the thumb piece, weighs 28.45 troy ounces and is in very good antique condition with a couple very slight dimples to the surface.

The oxidation around the base was recently applied to replicate the image from the archives.  As with the original oxidation, it is ephemeral and will polish away over time.
