This is a very unusual form and beautiful centerpiece/ serving basket. The tripartite configuration of the bowl is quite intriguing and useful for offering various delicacies, although Gorham's records indicate it was sold as a cake basket. The interior has a lovely, soft, matte finish. The borders of each of the sections are slightly raised.

The exterior wall of the bowl is creased and goes inward at the top as if being pinched by the handle which consists of three wires. A roundel with simple horizontal beading connects the wires. The bases of the handles terminate with applied leaves and 3 different floral scenes. The floral scenes are also secured with original nuts and screws.

Under each of the sections of the bowl are applied ring feet.

This stunning basket is marked with Gorham's trademark along with 'STERLING', the model number '456', the 1870 year code 'C' and by the venerable Philadelphia retailer 'BAILEY & CO'. It measures 10 inches at its widest point by 10 inches to the top of the handle, weighs 21.15 troy ounces and is is very good/ excellent antique condition showing light signs of use inside.
