Wood & Hughes Antique Sterling Silver Figural Ice Scoop, New York City, c. 1870's

This is an extremely rare serving piece. Made by the great firm of Wood & Hughes who are known for their exceptional casting, this unusual item is made from multiple cast pieces assembled together. The deep bowl is elongated with raised sides. It is pierced and covered in a gold wash on the front and back.

A curved, hexagonal wire handle is attached to the bowl and is flanked by classical mounted scroll and leaf design.

The upper part of the stem connects to a conical form with a beaded border. It is mounted to a pedestal with circular disc platform upon which a full figural cherub stands.

The draped cherub is holding above his head a circular ring which was used to hang this ice server (most likely from an exquisite ice bowl). The handle, with its multiple parts, is very unusual and figural pieces are quite rare.

This stunning server is marked 'W&H STERLING'. It measures 10.25 inches long, weighs 4 troy ounces and is in excellent antique condition with typical scratches to the bowl from use.
