William Gale & Son Antique Coin Silver Sugar Sifter, NYC, 1856

This is an early and beautiful sugar sifter which would also be good to used for straining small vegetables. Engraved at the top is a 'KMA' monogram surrounding a knotted vine with unfolding leaves around the reserve. These enveloping leaves also decorate the mid-section of the handle. These decorations also appear on the back of the handle which is engraved 'LWB'. The pierced bowl is wonderfully fluted and pierced with circles and stars. The reverse of the bowl where the handle joins has a lovely leaf decoration.

Apparently unpatented, the pattern on this sifter or pierced ladle is a delightful example of the foliate die rolled patterns popular during the 1850s.

This wonderful pierced server is marked on the back 'WG&S' along with the the company mark and date of '1856'. It measures 7.25 inches long, weighs 2.15 troy ounces and is in excellent antique condition.
