Whiting Antique Sterling Silver, Copper & Wood Serving Spoon, NYC, NY, c. 1870s

This incredible server consists of a curved, carved wooden handle with an attached gilded sterling bowl. Incorporated into the carved swirling decoration of the handle is an inset mixed-metal copper and silver decorative device, a 'shippo' design of Japanese origin. This lovely handle is fitted into a silver sleeve and secured on the front and back with a pin. The shaped bowl and sleeve are beautifully hammered. The bowl also displays a swirl design in its shape which complements the carved decoration of the handle. 

Surviving wooden handles like this are extremely rare, and this one is the finest we have had.

Swirling decorations like this are attributed to Charles Osborne at Whiting. Charles Osborne was by far Whiting's most famous and important designer, actually working for Tiffany's for a period from 1879-81, then returning to Whiting. This wonderful and rare serving spoon is marked with Whiting's trademark and 'STERLING/ 12.' It measures 10 inches long and is in excellent antique condition.
