Vansant & Co Antique Sterling Silver Ax-form Ice Cream Server, Philadelphia, PA, c. 1870s

This unusual serving piece is stunning. Its dramatic form is quite impressive, being shaped like a medieval weapon. This ax has a unique blade and an upturned backing with wonderful foliate engraving. The flat handle which tapers to a point at the top is also beautifully engraved with flowers and scrolls against a textured background. The reserve is engraved with an 'S' initial.

This fantastic server is marked with the Vansant & Co trademark and 'STERLING' and by the retailer 'Wm. G. Bailey.' It measures 11.75 inches long, weighs 6.15 troy ounces, and is in excellent antique condition.
