John Polhamus 'Corinthian' Pattern Antique Sterling Silver Fish Server, NYC, NY, c. 1870

This lovely fish slice is in a classically inspired pattern called 'Corinthian.' This blade is engraved with a beautiful central floral scene against a textured background, and the reverse of the handle is engraved with an original 'AOR' monogram.

John Polhamus (w. 1833-74) was a prominent New York silversmith who specialized in flatware. He was one of Tiffany & Co.'s principal suppliers before Tiffany made their own silver. This pattern is more often seen with George Shiebler's mark. Shiebler purchased Polhamus's shop when he retired, so this is an early example of the pattern.

This unusual antique server is marked on the back 'J.P./ PATENT 868' and by the great Philadelphia retailer 'BALL, BLACK & Co.' It measures 11.75 inches long, weighs 4.40 troy ounces and is in very good antique condition with light surface scratches to the blade from use.
